SUMMARY:COPD Symposium 2020: Advances in COPD Treatment
DESCRIPTION:COPD SYMPOSIUM 2020- ADVANCES IN COPD TREATMENT\nChronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a debilitating disease with increasing morbidity and mortality worldwide. The main goal of therapy is symptomatic relief and improvement of quality of life through different medical treatment. However\, such therapies cannot reverse or significantly reduce hyperinflation leaving patients with poor quality of life. In a selected subgroup of patients with predominant emphysema and hyperinflation\, bronchial valve therapy represents a further treatment option\, recently approved by the FDA. Recently\, trials have also focused on bronchoscopic treatment of chronic bronchitis. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive summary of the currently available clinical trials\, discuss common complications and their management as well as evaluation of proper patient selection in clinical practice. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES\nUpon completion of this activity\, participants will be able to: \n\n\n\n\n\nReview recent medical advances in treatment of COPD\nReview evidence based clinical trials for valve therapy in severe emphysema\nAble to recognize the predictors of success for valve therapy in severe emphysema\nDescribe complications related to valve therapy and how to manage them\nAppropriately select patients who candidate for valve therapy are as compared to surgical lung volume reduction in daily clinical practice\nAppropriately select patients who might be candidates for chronic bronchitis trials\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nTARGET AUDIENCE\nThis course is targeted to Primary Care Physicians\, Specialty Physicians\, Nurse Practitioners\, and Physician Assistants. This course may also be of interest to physicians who practice in Internal Medicine\, Pulmonary Medicine\, and Thoracic Surgery. \nCOURSE DIRECTORS\nFayez Kheir\, MD\, Msc\nIP Director\, Anna Jacques Hospital\, Interventional Pulmonology Clerkship\nDirector\, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center \nAdnan Majid\, MD\nDirector and Chief\, Interventional Pulmonology\, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center\nAssociate Professor of Medicine\, Harvard Medical School

SUMMARY:Asthma: New Discoveries and Therapies in the Age of COVID
DESCRIPTION:Asthma and related diseases in the form of COPD and asthma-COPD are a remarkably common\, affecting over 50 million patients in the US alone. Moreover\, this disease spectrum overlaps with inflammatory lung disease driven by respiratory viral infection\, including COVID-19. In the case of asthma\, the pathology is thought to arise from an aberrant type 2 immune response\, but the cellular and molecular mechanisms of this response require more precise definition\, including any contribution from non-type 2 immune mechanisms. Clinical trials based on these concepts have revealed both successes and also some unforeseen failures that need to be addressed and included in the framework of respiratory viruses in general and SARS-CoV-2 in particular. This Keystone Symposia conference on asthma will highlight the most recent basic science breakthroughs in the pathogenesis of asthma and related inflammatory airway diseases and focus on the development of new therapeutics for asthma and related progressive respiratory disease. In addition\, the program will review these discoveries in the context of new therapeutic directions\, including the context of emerging information about COVID-19. The program has been designed to emphasize to identify\, validate\, and translate new disease targets into new therapeutics. The topic is timely and urgent given the recent mechanistic insights into inflammatory airway disease\, the current maturation of new biological therapies for this type of disease\, and the overlap of this information with progressive lung disease after respiratory viral infections\, including COVID-19.

SUMMARY:Fifth Annual Clinical Advances in the Diagnosis and Management of Pulmonary Hypertension
DESCRIPTION:This conference will be offered via online livestreaming due to COVID-19 pandemic spread. \nThis conference will be unique in that it will cover all forms of pulmonary hypertension (PH). Expert faculty will discuss the epidemiology of PH\, how PH is diagnosed\, and the poor outcomes associated with PH when left untreated. Clinicians will leave with a better understanding of the difference between pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and PVH and why the difference matters. Therapies for PAH and pulmonary venous hypertension (PVH) will also be discussed with reference to current clinical guidelines. Participants will return to their practice equipped with the latest evidence base and practical information to improve patient outcomes. \nEvent Email: med.edu@scrippshealth.org

SUMMARY:Controversial Topics in Sarcoidosis
DESCRIPTION:This two-day course is designed to provide faculty and physicians-in-training an overview and update on the diagnosis and management of sarcoidosis and other interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) amidst the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Because of lower pulmonary and cardiac reserve and due to medications which suppress the immune system\, infections can be more severe in patients with sarcoidosis and other ILDs. The novel pandemic coronavirus\, has caused medical and economic crises around the globe. Studies querying how viral respiratory infections impact the care and clinical course of patients with sarcoidosis and other ILDs – e.g. preemptive adjustment of immunosuppressive medications – are ongoing. The predilection for extrathoracic involvement in sarcoidosis\, and in particular cardiomyopathy\, adds an extra dynamic with the risk for coronavirus fulminant myocarditis. Furthermore\, patients with COVID-19 severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (SARS) are at risk for developing ILD. The course will involve lectures delivered by experts in the field\, highlighting clinical and treatment features having an impact on both the risk for infection and risk for poor outcome among patients with sarcoidosis or other ILDs as well as general updates on screening practices and treatment.
