SUMMARY:The 2023 International Workshop on Pulmonary Imaging
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 International Workshop on Pulmonary Imaging\nFebruary 23–25\, 2023\n\nWelcome to the 2023 International Workshop on Pulmonary Imaging. As is always the case at this multidisciplinary meeting\, we have worked hard to include presenters who are able to speak authoritatively on a wide range of current topics—from lung physiology and mechanics to pulmonary imaging techniques\, IPF\, and recent advancements in hyperpolarization technology. This year\, for this first time\, we have also included sessions dedicated to photon-counting CT and pre-COPD.\nThe program is divided into 17 sessions consisting of more than 65 total presentations split between keynote lectures\, presentations from leading researchers in pulmonary imaging\, rising stars in the field\, as well as a number of shorter presentations from postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. Presentations in each session are typically organized around an underlying method or concept. While the discussion periods at the end of each session are limited by time constraints\, we hope that the numerous breaks between sessions will allow meeting participants to engage in further\, informal conversation about the presentations.\n  \nAgain\, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to this meeting.\n\nWarren Gefter\, MD                                                 \nProfessor of Radiology\,\nUniversity of Pennsylvania\nRahim Rizi\, Ph.D.\nProfessor of Radiology\,\nUniversity of Pennsylvania\nJohn Mugler\, Ph.D.                                                        \nProfessor of Radiology\,\nUniversity of Virginia\nGiles Santyr\, Ph.D.\nProfessor of Medical Biophysics\nUniversity of Toronto

SUMMARY:14th Interventional Pulmonology In Cancer Patients/Intensive Hands-on Course
DESCRIPTION:Date & Location\nThursday\, February 23\, 2023\, 7:00 AM – Friday\, February 24\, 2023\, 4:45 PM\, MD Anderson – Mitchell Building\, Houston\, TX \nTarget Audience\nSpecialties – Pulmonology\, Thoracic/Head and Neck\nProfessions – Physician (MD or DO)\, Respiratory Therapist\, Student or Trainee\n  \nCredits\nAMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (14.25 hours)\, Non-Physician Attendance (14.25 hours)\, ABIM MOC Part 2 (14.25 hours) \nOverview\nThe activity is designed to review the current concepts and recent advances in interventional pulmonology as it pertains to the cancer patient\, and to introduce new technologic advances that are poised to revolutionize the diagnosis\, staging\, and management of lung cancer. Malignancies involving the lungs continue to provide a significant challenge to chest physicians. With the exponential increase in technology\, several minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic strategies are becoming feasible. As the largest cancer center in the world\, MD Anderson is able to offer a depth and breadth of clinical experience and training that few can match. With a distinguished faculty made up of the world’s top experts\, this course is designed to provide the participant with a state-of-the-art review of the principles and practice of interventional pulmonology in patients with thoracic malignancies. In addition to attending interactive didactic sessions\, participants will also receive extensive practical instruction in selected techniques utilizing in vivo animal models. Instruction group size is limited in order to maximize interaction and individual “hot zone” time. Additional instruction can be individualized for those wishing to emphasize particular techniques. Endobronchial Ultrasound techniques will be particularly stressed\, and participants should be able to acquire the cognitive and technical skills to safely perform Endobronchial Ultrasound guided transbronchial needle biopsies upon course completion. \nObjectives\nAt the conclusion of this activity\, learners will be able to:\n  \n\nUtilize appropriate lung cancer screening techniques according to national guidelines and standards.\nAssimilate the therapeutic options for management of airway tumors.\nInterpret the available evidence for adjunctive therapies in the palliative and curative management of lung cancer.\nUtilize the principles of evidence-based medicine in evaluating new technologies.\nDemonstrate the ability to perform Endobronchial Ultrasound-Guided Transbronchial Needle Aspiration on a porcine model.\nPerform endobronchial stenting on a porcine model.\nIncorporate evidence based best practices for the management of recurrent malignant pleural effusions.\n\n  \nRegistration\nThe 14th Interventional Pulmonology in Cancer Patients Hands-On Course\, will begin at 8:00 AM on Thursday\, February 23\, 2023 and the course will conclude at 4:30 PM\, Friday\, February 24\, 2023. SUMMARY:Strategies to Improve Diagnosis and Treatment of Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Lung Disease
DESCRIPTION:More than 200 species of nontuberculous mycobacteria exist that produce both pulmonary and extrapulmonary disease\nAccording to the National Managed Care Claims Database (Optum)\, the prevalence of NTM-LD is increasing\, and approximately 27 million individuals have the disease\nRisk factors for NTM-LD include underlying conditions (eg\, CF/CFTR anomalies\, AAT anomalies\, COPD\, pneumoconiosis\, collagen vascular disease\, bronchiectasis\, TNF alpha antagonists\, alveolar proteinosis\, chronic aspiration)\, significant environmental exposures (eg\, aerosolized soil and water\, endemic areas)\, and innate host issues (eg\, postmenopausal women\, thin women with distinct body habitus\, predisposition to hypersensitivity)\nDifferent clinical phenotypes for nodular/bronchiectatic and fibrocavitary NTM-LD disease include age\, sex\, body type\, and smoking status\nMedian time from symptom onset to diagnosis is 10 months with a range of 1 month to 6 years\nAccording to the 2020 ATS/ERS/ESCMID/IDSA clinical practice guidelines for NTM-LD\, a 3-drug\, macrolide-containing regimen is recommended and can be administered intermittently (noncavitary) or daily (cavitary); parenteral amikacin (including amikacin liposome inhalation solution) or streptomycin is suggested in patients with cavitary\, extensive bronchiectatic\, or macrolide-resistant disease\nIn patients who meet the diagnostic criteria for NTM-LD\, treatment should be started (ie\, rather than watchful waiting)\, especially in the context of positive acid-fast bacilli sputum smears and/or cavitary lung disease\nFactors related to disease progression include bacterial load (ie\, smear positive) and radiographic extent of disease; other predictors are older age\, low BMI (< 18.5)\, comorbidities\, low albumin\, anemia\, and elevated inflammatory indices\nPatients face many challenges with NTM-LD and experience real fears and struggles and losses in quality of life; it is important to share goals\, set expectations\, and provide education on adverse event management

SUMMARY:Respiratory viruses: New Frontiers 2022
DESCRIPTION:This Keystone Symposia conference will focus on novel insights into respiratory virus biology that may ultimately lead to more effective prevention and treatment strategies. In many cases\, these novel insights are made possible by new tools that are now available to study pathogens whose infectious cycle is largely restricted to the airways. New information about virus-host interactions will be discussed\, as well as the interplay among diverse microorganisms present in the host airways. The long-term ramifications of respiratory virus infections beyond acute disease will be explored along with both recent successes and failures in prevention and treatment. This conference is a joint symposium with Viral Immunity: Basic Mechanisms and Therapeutic Applications and will have a few combined sessions.
